Your Podiatrist Has Treatment Options for Painful Hammertoes
A hammertoe is a frequent reason for patients to visit Eric Kosofsky, DPM and Robert Rutstein, DPM. How much do you know about this common foot deformity?
What Is a Hammertoe?
A hammertoe is a slowly-developing foot deformity that affects the middle joint of a toe. The smaller toes are most typically affected. A hammertoe bends, sometimes tightly, and rises out of line with the others. There are two types of hammertoes, rigid and flexible. As you might imagine, these terms refer to the ability to bend and straighten the affected toe. It can be nearly impossible to use the joint of a severely rigid hammertoe.
What Causes a Hammertoe?
A hammertoe is caused by the shortening of a tendon in the toe. Routinely wearing tight, poorly fitting shoes increases your risk of hammertoes, as do high heels. For this reason, women are at higher risk of this foot deformity than men are. Other contributing factors are arthritis, injuries, and foot shape – men and women whose second toes are longer than their big toes are at risk.
What Are the Symptoms of a Hammertoe?
In addition to that change in foot shape, be alert to swelling, redness, and foot pain when standing, walking, running, or going about your daily activities. Of course, these symptoms can point to numerous injuries and ailments. Only a board-certified podiatrist like Dr. Eric Kosofsky and Dr. Robert Rutstein can accurately diagnose the source of your discomfort.
