Take Steps to Prevent a Fall
How much do you know about your risk of a fall or what you can do to lower it? Here is some important information from Dr. Eric Kosofsky and Dr. Robert Rutstein.
Who Is at Risk of a Fall?
Everyone is at risk of a fall, even young people and athletes. Tripping and falling are common reasons for foot and ankle injuries and visits to the podiatrist’s office. That said, the risk does increase with age. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that approximately 30% of Americans over the age of 65 will fall each year. After age 85, that figure jumps to over 50%. Women are at slightly greater risk than men, especially when they live alone. These falls commonly result in bone fractures, hospitalization, and infection. Of even greater concern is the fact that falls account for nearly half of the injury-related deaths among senior citizens each year.
What Can You Do To Reduce Your Risk of a Fall?
Here are three suggestions from the doctors at Hartford Podiatry Group:
Tidy up your home. Clutter on the floor is a hazard. If you have area rugs, replace them with wall-to-wall carpet to eliminate the possibility of tripping on the edges. Make sure that burned-out light bulbs are replaced promptly. If you need help changing them, enlist the assistance of a friend or family member.
Use an assistive device for walking if you need one. If your doctor has recommended a cane or a walker, it will improve your stability and keep you safe on the street and at home.
See your foot doctor regularly. With years of specialized training, a board-certified podiatrist like Eric Kosofsky, DPM and Robert Rutstein, DPM is the best-qualified medical professional to care for your feet, ankles, and lower legs.
